Q Ethan McCallum is a consultant, writer, and technology enthusiast, though perhaps not in that order. His work has appeared online on The O’Reilly Network and Java.net, and also in print publications such as C/C++ Users Journal, Doctor Dobb’s Journal, and Linux Magazine. In his professional roles, he helps companies to make smart decisions about data and technology.

Stephen Weston has been working in high performance and parallelcomputing for over 25 years. He was employed at Scientific Computing Associates in the 90's, working on the Linda programming system, invented by David Gelernter. He was also a founder of Revolution Computing, leading the development of parallel computing packages for R, including nws, foreach, doSNOW, and doMC. He works at Yale University as an HPC Specialist.

Great introductions to 6 approaches to distributed computing

You have a problem: R is single-threaded, but your code would be faster if it could simultaneously run on more than one core. You have access to a cluster and/or your computer has multiple cores. Parallel R, by Q. Ethan McCallum and Stephen Weston, can help you put this extra computing power to use. The review on my blog ([...]) has several useful links.

The book describes 6 approaches to distributed computing:

1) snow
The chapter starts by showing you how to create a socket cluster on a single machine (later sections discuss MPI clusters, and socket clusters of several machines). Then a section describes how to initialize workers, with a later section giving a slightly advanced discussion on how functions are serialized to workers.

There's a great demonstration (including graphs) of why/when you should use clusterApplyLB instead of clusterApply. There's also a fantastic discussion on potential I/O issues (probably one of the most surprising/confusing issues to people new to distributed computing) and how parApply handles them. Then the authors provide a very useful parApplyLB function.

There are a few (but very important!) paragraphs on random number generation using the rsprng and rlecuyer packages.

2) multicore
The chapter starts by noting that the multicore package only works on a single computer running a POSIX compliant operating system (i.e. most anything except Windows).

The next section describes the mclapply function, and also explains how mclapply creates a cluster each time it's called, why this isn't a speed issue, and how it is actually beneficial. The next few sections describe some of the optional mclapply arguments, and how you can achieve load balancing with mclapply. A good discussion of pvec, parallel, and collect functions follow.

There are some great tips on how to use the rsprng and rlecuyer packages for random number generation, even though they aren't directly supported by the multicore package. The chapter concludes with a short, but effective, description of multicore's low-level API.

3) parallel (comes with R >= 2.14.0)
The chapter starts by noting that the parallel package is a combination of the snow and multicore packages. This chapter is relatively short, since those two packages were covered in detail over the prior two chapters. Most of the content discusses the implementation differences between parallel and snow/multicore.

4) R+Hadoop
There's a full chapter primer on Hadoop and MapReduce, for those who aren't familiar with the software and concept. The chapter ends with an introduction to Amazon's EC2 and EMR services, which significantly lower the barrier to using Hadoop.

The chapter on R+Hadoop is very little R and mostly Hadoop. This is because Hadoop requires more setup than the other approaches. You will need to do some work on the command line and with environment variables.

There are three examples; one Hadoop streaming and two using the Java API (which require writing/modifying some Java code). The authors take care to describe each block of code in all the examples, so it's accessible to those who haven't written Java.

5) RHIPE
Using three examples, this chapter provides a thorough treatment of how to use RHIPE to abstract-away a lot of the boilerplate code required for Hadoop. Everything is done in R. As with the Hadoop chapter, the authors describe each block of code.

RHIPE does require a little setup: it must be installed on your workstation and all cluster nodes. In the examples, the authors describe how RHIPE allows you to transfer R objects between Map and Reduce phases, and they mention the RHIPE functions you can use to manipulate HDFS data.

6) segue
This is a very short chapter because the segue package has very narrow scope: using Amazon's EMR service in two lines of code!

Final thoughts:
I would recommend this book to someone who is looking to move beyond the most basic distributed computing solutions. The authors are careful to point you in the right direction and warn you of potential pitfalls of each approach.

All but the most basic setups (e.g. a socket cluster on a single machine) will require some familiarity with the command line, environment variables, and networking. This isn't the fault of the authors or any of the approaches... parallel computing just isn't that easy.

I really expected to see something on using foreach, especially since Stephen Weston has done work on those packages. It is mentioned briefly at the end of the book, so maybe it will appear in later editions.

Just an overview: too little (or too much), not just right :-(

Adding 300pp or so would be very helpful. This book does not cover enough ground for sophisticated, statistics literate beginners in R (like me) and I think that less of it would probably be enough for people who know more about R and 'big data"tools.

I would pay many tenfolds the price for more information in this book. The author is definitely an expert: I hope he writes the right book soon as there is a market for it.

R is a great tool and many of us are very interested in parallel --but this book for some will be just an appetizer.

Great Practical Handbook

As an electrical engineer who has been out of school for a few years, I found this book to be tremendously helpful in covering topics I either never really delved into or only took intro courses on. It provided excellent explanations on both data conversion concepts and the hardware used to realize them. I found the handbook's explanation of device parameter specifications to be incredibly useful, giving the knowledge needed to pick the right part for my job. They also have testing and analysis procedures for different elements and great example circuits. Great book. I definitely recommend it.

The bible of A-D conversion

If you're doing circuit and system design involving analog-digital conversion, you need this book. Packed with detailed information from the industry leader in converter chips. Lots of tips and information about typical problems and how to avoid them, including power supply noise, layout considerations, keeping the digital transients out of the analog signal chain (not to mention the inputs of the ADC), etc. A very practical and useful book for mixed-signal design engineers.

A partisan review of the book from "Analog Dialogue"

At last! A modern book on data conversion worthy to succeed our 1986 landmark Analog-Digital Conversion Handbook (3rd edition). The Data Conversion Handbook is based on the book, Analog-Digital Conversion, a comprehensive set of notes for a recent Analog Devices seminar series on data converters.

In a digital world, A/D and D/A conversion is essential to translate between analog real-world physical variables and the abstract 1s and 0s of digital processing. The book's nine chapter titles offer a hint of its breadth, as well as its orientation to practical designing with and use of converters: Data-converter history; Fundamentals of sampled-data systems; Data-converter architectures; Data-converter process technology; Testing data converters; Interfacing to data converters; Data-converter support circuits; Data-converter applications; and Hardware design techniques.

The first chapter, data-converter history, starts with the early 18th-century background in hydraulic water-metering systems in the Ottoman empire, then-when electricity came into use-from the 19th century telegraph era through the 1950s. The chapter then covers progress-decade-by-decade-in technology, circuitry, and applications of converters during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Where relevant, historical contexts are also noted in some of the later chapters.

The second chapter, fundamentals of sampled-data systems, sets the stage for hardware design-discussing coding and quantizing, sampling theory, data-converter ac errors, general data-converter specifications, and definitions of specifications.

Chapter 3, data-converter architectures, discusses DAC architectures, ADC architectures, and sigma-delta converters. Although it concentrates on the most popular designs, it seeks not to neglect any significant approach. For example, among DACs it discusses the Kelvin divider (string DACs), thermometer (fully decoded DACs), binary-weighted DACs, R-2R DACs, segmented DACs, oversampling interpolating DACs, multiplying DACs, intentionally nonlinear DACs, counting pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) DACs, cyclic serial DACs, and "other low-distortion architectures"-and naturally, the sigma-delta converter section includes sigma-delta DACs.

The fourth chapter covers a wide range of data-converter process technologies, from the early vacuum-tube converters, through solid-state modular and hybrid converters, to bipolar, complementary-bipolar (CB), and CMOS integrated-circuit processes. Also covered are thin-film resistor and calibration processes; and there is a section on smart partitioning: optimizing performance, space, and cost by intelligent choice of process partitioning within a package.

Chapter 5 provides in-depth discussions of a wide variety of testing techniques for static and dynamic performance characteristics of DACs and ADCs. The following chapter, interfacing to data converters, has a major section devoted to analog interface considerations in driving ADC inputs. Other sections in this chapter include ADC and DAC digital interfaces (and related issues), buffering DAC analog outputs, data-converter voltage references, and sampling-clock generation.

Chapter 7, data-converter support circuits, discusses in depth such important analog auxiliary circuits as voltage references; low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator circuits; analog-, digital-, and video switches (including cross-point types) and multiplexers; and sample (track)-and-hold circuits.

The foregoing chapters, some 60% of the book, amount to a virtual appetizer for the banquet of tutorial material in the last two chapters: data-converter applications (Chapter 8) and hardware design techniques (Chapter 9). These two chapters amount to a practical course on design solutions and techniques that can enrich the portfolio of any designer, from the technician and recent graduate to the hardened systems engineer.

The wide-ranging coverage in Chapter 8 is apportioned among eight topics: precision measurement and sensor conditioning, multichannel data-acquisition systems, digital potentiometers, digital audio, digital video and display electronics, software radio and IF sampling, direct digital synthesis, and precision analog microcontrollers.

Finally, Chapter 9's 185 pages are in themselves essentially a textbook for the hardware designer. Its eight topical areas are labeled: passive components, pc-board design issues, analog power-supply systems, overvoltage protection, thermal management, EMI/RFI considerations, low-voltage logic interfacing, and breadboarding & prototyping. Chapter 9 is followed by a comprehensive subject index and an indexed listing of Analog Devices products mentioned in the book.

This book will be a valuable addition to the library of the student, the practicing circuit design engineer and technician, and anyone else who needs a good practical grasp of what is needed for a successful marriage between the analog and digital worlds.

Outstanding professional resource!

Ok, I was very skeptical. I've bought several "professional" pilot resources, most have been disappointing. I kept considering this book, it is pricey, but finally ordered it.
It is absolutely the best single source regulatory/AIM professional pilot oriented review in existence. If you disagree with an interpretation of a regulation, Mr. Lengel has thoroughly documented his sources so you can easily check the source yourself. Plus (and this is a plus) there are indeed a lot of cheesy graphics to keep the text entertaining, plus a few wry comments on some of the questionable regs our wonderful FAA has imposed upon us.
I can't recommend this one highly enough. I am an ATP with 9000+ hours, currently flying for a night cargo airline, spent 18 years flying heavy transports in the ANG as well, plus some time as a Part 121 airline driver. Mr. Lengel has done a great service for all professional pilots, choke up the money if you are serious!

This book is totally amazing. In a CFI class of 8, one person bought it the first day. We all were skeptical, it was a little bit more money than your average pilot handbook. By the end of the week, 6 of the 8 had it. By the end of the second week everyone had it. It is so incredibly easy to read and understand. As it states on the cover, "Plain English" that couldn't be more accurate. I own a long shelf of pilot books but this one is the only one that seems to sum everything up. The part I love about this book the most is its quick reference qualities. That day you're sitting around wondering about something or your student asks a question and you draw a blank, all you need to do is crack this book and the answer is right there in bold letters (literally).
This book probably wouldn't be of much use for someone who isn't already familiar with the material however.

Going from CFI In training to Commercial ATP I use this book

A few years ago I bought the 5th Edition in hopes of finding a book that would easily help me review for student lessons and just clear up some of the CFI lounge arguments. The book has helped not only me but my students and fellow c.f.i. friends explain many of the harder questions.

I also used the books 121 section to study and review for my First regional airline interview. I was the only one out of an interview group of 12 that received an invitation to work for the airline. Every so often I bring the book along with me on trips to keep current with everything, every pilot who borrows it eager to see what I'm reading always says "huh i didn't know that... this is great where did you get this book!"

Now that I have my first Mainline Interview coming up soon, I bought the 6th Edition along with several other well known interview books to study with. I cant recommend this book enough to every level of pilot out there who wants an extremely easy to read book with all the important stuff you need!
