Stephan Niederwieser is not only a fine writer; he is also a caring humanist. Practical, informative, tasteful, and with a good sense of humor he has prepared a manual complete with black and white photographs that addresses the existence of, the cautions about, and the instructions for satisfactory consummation of physical needs that could as easily be a manual for women as for men, as entry from the rear is popular in all sexual practices. But Niederwieser directs this illustrated volume to the male crowd, and the manner in which he approaches the psychological impasses, the preparation on the part of both partners in both the mental aspects as well as the physical aspects, addressing the fears as well as the pleasures and the varieties has never been available in such a relaxed and informed manner.

All aspects of the topic are covered - lubricants, self preparation with dilating toys, prevention of diseases (and what diseases could accompany this type of physical activity), positioning, myths, methods, legends, overcoming fears - and Niederwieser adds so much comfortable chat with his serious information that the reader will find this 'guide' as entertaining as a good read! Entertaining Read, Great Info for Novices

Stephan Niederwieser is definitely someone I'd like to meet and invite to a dinner party. His droll, clever, sometimes outrageous, always consistent humor totally annihilates any comparison of this book to a scholarly tome or classroom text, yet the information is there and deftly imparted to anyone who may not be familiar with the actual pleasures to be experienced via their physical toybox. Even as a life-long veteran of anal sex, there were a few tidbits of information I'd either not known about or had let slip to the back of my mind. In general, though, for me the book was entertaining, hilarious, unpredictable, even vulgar -- but in the most amusing sort of way. Some of the potential hazards and even likelihoods that Niederwieser bluntly comments upon might create a "cringe factor," which novitiates to anal stimulation or those still in the fantasizing phase might use as an excuse to avoid exploring this aspect of their bodies' pleasure centers forever. If carefully read from cover to cover, however, Niederwieser addresses nearly all of the possible negative occurrences, along with the nearly unavoidable negative programming and alarming ramifications many must endure in order to experience anal sex for the first time. He then suggests the most practical and up-to-date manners of avoiding or dealing with these possible occurrences, which should set most un-hopelessly neurotic minds at rest. And once mastered (usually after the second, perhaps the third, encounter -- after that it's all about perfecting one's technique), think of the possibilities, the potential, the opportunities to double, triple, or more, one's pleasure?! I recommend the book to all, not just those needing a kick-start into the world of anal exploration and enjoyment.

About the Author
is an Associate Professor of Psychology and the Director of Clinical Services and Director of the Center for Brief Therapy at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She received her PsyD in clinical psychology from Loyola College in Baltimore and completed an APA approved internship at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a post-doctoral fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She is board certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. As a licensed psychologist, her clinical and scholarly work includes nonpharmacological pain management, somatization disorder and psychology in primary care. She is a member of several professional organizations and has published and presented on various clinical health psychology topics.

Superb resource

This volume can best be described as comprehensive, wide-ranging, valuable, and useful. It is useful inasmuch as the material described is rather easily adapted to patient work. The idea of this handbook examining a cognitive behavioral persepctive on this range of medical problems is reflective of the zeitgeist of the field. It is timely, up-to-date with entries authored by some of the foremost professionals in the field. The editing team, two psychologists (DiTomasso and Golden), and a family physician (Morris) made sure that the material covered would meet the needs of the psychologist, counselor and social worker needing insight into medical problems and the medical professional (physician, nurse, and physician assistant) being offered the behavioral side of the equation. The professional looking through the table of contents will find something for everybody. This is clearly a book for the shelf of every behavioral health professional.

The story of Henry Horner, Illinois governor from 1933 until he died in 1940, is one of many contradictions. Horner, who was born into a family of successful Jewish businessmen, managed to straddle the divide between the respectable good-government crowd and the rough and tumble ward politics of Chicago during the Capone years. At various times, Horner found himself an ally of Chicago's powerful Democratic machine and the object of its wrath. And, while remaining a staunch Democrat, Horner nevertheless found himself at loggerheads with the Roosevelt administration during the Depression.



The portrait of Horner that emerges in Charles Masters' account is that of a deeply principled man, committed to a practical, common-sense politics organized "not in terms of abstract policy, but in terms of people and material conditions." The book's first half provides the reader with a good overview of Chicago politics from the city's founding until the 1930s. But the book begins to really shine with its account of Horner's 1932 campaign for governor and his ensuing eight years as the state's chief executive.



Masters' well-written and entertaining popular history captures a unique perspective on the Depression, looking at President Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal from the perspective of Illinois and Chicago politics. In doing so, he has recovered a frequently forgotten strand of opposition to the New Deal, fiscally conservative but nevertheless deeply sympathetic to the plight of the poor and to limited government intervention on their behalf.

Chicago attorney Charles J. Masters is also the author of Glidermen of Neptune: The American D-Day Glider Attack, which was a featured selection in both the Military Book Club and the Aviators’ Guild Book Club. A recognized authority on World War II, he has been a guest on numerous radio shows and was an adviser and the key speaker on History Channel’s “Silent Wing Warriors.”

Interesting Read

What a great book. My wife knows how much I love Chicago history and she picked this book up for me over the holidays. I don't get a chance to read much, and am very selective about what I spend my time reading. I had purchased two books on my own since I had a weekend off, A Michio Kaku Physics book (this guy is a genius) and a the biography of Augustus Caesar. I felt bad not reading the book my wife bough me so I thought I would give it a try.

The book was truly riveting. It is hard to describe what an amazing (but definitely overlooked) figure Horner is in Chicago history. I literally did not put the book down for 16 hours. If you like Chicago history, or history at all for that matter, pick up this book. This is the first review I have ever felt compelled to write. I don't have time to read, let alone write reviews, but this book provides an insight you won't find in any class, or on any bookshelf if you aren't looking for it. I cannot tell you the last time I enjoyed a book so much.

It is my sincere hope this author takes on another history book, and I really hope it is a Chicago history book. I can't remember when I read something this well written and enjoyed it so much.

An Intriguing Illinois Governor Gets His Due

Masters brings a lawyer's understanding to solving the enigma that was Henry Horner, who was Governor of Illinois from January 1933 through October 1940. Born to a well-do-do Jewish family, he had a great sympathy for the common man. His relations with the political establishment were complex. He rose from Probate Judge to Governor, but was unafraid to take on both the Kelly-Nash organization and FDR. He was married to public service, and spent his Sundays while Governor making surprise visits to mental institutions, where he would visit patients and compare purchase vouchers against supplies to see if there were any discrepancies. A dedicated collector, his extensive Lincoln collection is now among the treasures of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. This is a welcome and revealing account of a complex man. His story is a true hidden gem of Illinois history.

Fascinating Bio

Vincent Cronin presents a thorough portrait of one of history's most exciting female leaders. Catherine the Great ousted her husband to take the throne of a country viewed as an insignificant backwater by the rest of the world and upgraded its economy, educational system, artistic culture, health care system and industries at a time when women were considered incapable of either leadership or high intelligence.

Cronin explains her background and her personal relationships from reliable sources, including Catherine's own memoirs, written for her son to read after her death. Catherine's reputation suffered through the centuries due to the number of her openly sexual relationships. I can understand why he includes a list of her lovers here, although the fact that he "must" is infuriating, since male historical leaders rarely undergo such scrutiny. That this double standard continues to endure into the twenty-first century is a sad commentary on both Catherine's time and our own.

Cronin's history reads almost like a novel. His writing style makes the story intensely personal instead of coldly academic. This reader finds footnotes an annoying distraction, and there's none of that here. The sources are listed in depth in the back instead of splattered throughout the book. The result is a personal, intense experience that makes the reader feel as if they're in Catherine's orbit. I look forward to reading more of his work.

This is a fine biography of one of history's most formidable females. Highly recommend it!
