World War Cthulhu: A Collection of Lovecraftian War Stories, by Brian M. Sammons, Glynn Owen Barrass

This edition includes 22 interior illustrations. The world is at war against things that slink and gibber in the darkness, and titans that stride from world to world, sewing madness and death. War has existed in one form or another since the dawn of human civilization, and before then, Elder terrors battled it out across this planet and this known universe in ways unimaginable.

It has always been a losing battle for our side since time began. Incidents like the Innsmouth raid, chronicled by H.P. Lovecraft, mere blips of victory against an insurmountable foe. Still we fight, against these incredible odds, in an unending nightmare, we fight, and why? For victory, for land, for a political ideal? No, mankind fights for survival.

Our authors, John Shirley, Mark Rainey, Wilum Pugmire, William Meikle, Tim Curran, Jeffrey Thomas and many others have gathered here to share war stories from the eternal struggle against the darkness. This book chronicles these desperate battles from across the ages, including Roman Britain, The American Civil War, World War Two, The Vietnam Conflict, and even into the far future.

This anthology invades the top spot on your bookshelf
By Dave Anderson
I've always liked Cthulhu battling us mortals and our war machines, and I was lucky enough to talk to one of the authors in this anthology once about that very subject. That author was Jeffrey Thomas, and he told me (I'm paraphrasing here) “Cthulhu behaving like Godzilla, taking on the military and knocking over buildings takes away from the awesome power of the Old Ones”, and I feel like this anthology carefully avoids that. John Shirley's LOYALTY, the anthologies first story, almost directly deals with that. The beings of the Mythos are so powerful, one doesn't simply engage them like King Kong or Godzilla.

No, WORLD WAR CTHULHU takes on the subject of Man Vs. The Mythos and does a classy, literary take on it. Like all Brian Sammons anthologies, these pages are populated by some of the best living authors (in this reviewer's opinion) we have today, which means a little less action then you would think, but a lot more story. Don't get me wrong, plenty of weapons are fired off, but a prospective reader should be happy that there are some 'tales to be told' here. And when the guns do go a-blazing, and empty cartridges, or laser batteries, litter the floor, I clapped with delight. This is WAR after all.

THE GAME CHANGERS, a tale by Stephen Mark Rainey, takes us into Vietnam after the first tale's futuristic lesson in messing with Cthulhu, and gives us a story of slightly less epic scope (Cthulhu himself isn't battling Aliens for the planet) which sets the more intimate scope of the rest of the stories. There's plenty of 'warring' going on in this book, but we see a lot of it from a more personal perspective. Again, there's definitely action, THE BULLET AND THE FLESH injects the wild world of Mythos Spy Harrison Peel into the anthology and gives us the requisite bullets and bombs we expect from the series. Similarly, editors Sammons and Barass take us on a journey with Sammons' oft-used protagonist 'Jordan', who also resides in the Peel-verse. The universe gets even more love (perhaps) with subtle winks in Pete Rawlik's COLD WAR, YELLOW FEVER which is a damn amazing Cold War piece. That story makes me hungry for ATOMIC AGE CTHULHU, which is another effort helmed by Sammons that exclusively takes place around the Cold War Era.

The more intimate tales aren't anything to scoff at, though, like Tim Curran's THE PROCYON project which had a very THE MIST feel to it. I love the classic King tale, which had Lovecraftian influences of its own, and author Tim Curran delivers a much different take on a similar concept. Military Personnel are experimenting with opening a doorway to another dimension, and not only do creatures slip through, but seemingly the entire alien realm itself. This time we get a front row seat courtesy of a security guard, who's an aging war veteran (a nice wink to the anthologies themes). The intimate tales with less guns and action still have a lot of 'firepower', as seen in Tim Curran's instant classic.

We get a fun foray into a huge Punktown Battle in WUNDERWAFFE, a pretty self enclosed story taking place in Jeffrey Thomas' entertaining universe. A treat for fans, but still readable for new comers. Fans of historical fiction and early 1900's time frames will be happy to know that they get some love too. There's even some sword and sandal action in here for the errant 'Troy' fan, so worry not about your favorite time period, it could be represented here.

But, this review doesn't end quite there. In addition to some fantastic cover work from Vincent Chong, we have a cavalcade of artwork from M. Wayne Miller! Miller is a HUGE force in weird/dark fiction and horror, where many of his illustrated masterpieces preside. EVERY story in the book get's full color M. Wayne Miller are work; it's like having a cover for EACH STORY! You can thank the Indiegogo campaign contributors for that! The art is simply amazing.

World War Cthulhu is the complete package, 5/5 enthusiastic stars.

Humanity vs. other-dimensional terror
By hollowman
Comprised of newcomers and seasoned veterans; spanning continents and different eras, World War Cthulhu is finally here. I followed the development of this fine anthology from its crowd-funding beginning to the success it has become in all its full-color, all-new-stories glory.

The book comes in four editions: e-book, standard paperback with black and white illustrations, special paperback with colour illustrations, signed numbered hardcover and leather-bound slipcased lettered edition of only twenty-six copies. There are twenty-two all-new stories with just as many illustrations by M. Wayne Miller and Vincent Chong providing the cover.

Each author puts his spin on the Cthulhu Mythos; Darreil Schweitzer’s Roman legionnaire attempts to rationalize and explain the unexplainable terror he witnessed in the night; Tim Curran’s war veterans now employed as night guards at a secret science station, faced with immense, other-dimensional evil decided that denial was the most sensible choice; John Shirley’s Loyalty is futuristic/SF horror with Cthulhu as a weapon (that of course, has its own repercussions); Wunderwaffe by Jeffrey Thomas takes us to the outer space human colony of Paxton a.k.a. Punktown; W.H. Pugmire is writing in Lovecraft’s lyrical style with an ending that will raise the hairs on your neck; William Meikle’s Broadsword is a fast adventure story that just could be a Where Eagles Dare reference.

WWC is nearly 400 pages and I read nearly half that in one sitting. I’d say that’s a good thing. Very nice addition to the Cthulhu Mythos/pastiche.

Cthulhu Cool
By Amazon Customer
A great collection of Cthulhu tales, and some of my favorites I've ever read are included. Of course, with any and all anthologies, there were a couple I didn't care for, but even those were good stories but didn't compare to some of the more brilliant ones. Overall an excellent collection and well worth the price!
