Due to this unconventional but commonsense approach, David Goldstein of Littler Mendelson, the largest labor firm in the U.S., was asked to review Performance-based Hiring and provide a general statement of validity. Here's his summary:

"Because the Performance-based Hiring system does differ from traditional recruiting and hiring processes, questions arise as to whether employers can adopt Performance-based Hiring and still comply with the complex array of statutes, regulations, and common law principals that regulate the workplace. The answer is yes.

In particular:

A properly prepared performance profile can identify and document the essential functions of a job better than traditional position descriptions, facilitating the reasonable accommodation of disabilities and making it easier to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and similar laws.
Even employers that maintain more traditional job descriptions may still use performance profiles or summaries of performance profiles to advertise job openings. Employers are not legally required to post their internal job descriptions when advertising an open position. Nor is there any legal obligation to (or advantage in) posting boring ads.
Focusing on Year 1 and Beyond criteria may open the door to more minority, military, and disabled candidates who have a less 'traditional' mix of experiences, thereby supporting affirmative action or diversity efforts.
Conducting performance-based interviews ensures that the interviews will be structured and properly focused and minimizes the risk of an interviewer inquiring into protected characteristic. Moreover, since the performance-based interviews are conducted pursuant to a common methodology, one is assured that the candidates are being fairly compared.
Performance-based interviewing promotes fair consideration of the different skills and experiences that each candidate has to offer--which is essential to promoting diversity."

About the Author

David Herman teaches in the Department of English at Ohio State University. He has published several studies in the field, including The Cambridge Companion to Narrative, Narrative Theory and the Cognitive Sciences, Story Logic, and Narratologies.

Manfred Jahn is based at the University of Cologne in Germany and has published articles on focalization, represented speech and thought, and cognitive narratology in venues such as the Journal of Pragmatics, Poetics Today, Style, and Narratologies. A bit too theoretical

I'm new to narrative theory, and I came to this book looking for insights that will help me to talk about literature with college students, rather than to teach or write about theory itself. The book's wide range can certainly make for interesting browsing, and the various "navigational aids" are helpful, at least in the print version I'm using. Many articles, though, seem like lapidary summaries of their respective topics by contributors who are talking more to their peers and grad students than to poor shnooks like me who perhaps naïvely think of an encyclopedia as someplace to get an overview of the basics.

Despite this book's very generous scope (which is the main reason I give it four stars), in any work of this type there are nits one can pick. I was disappointed that most of the entry "Japanese narrative" focused on works from around 1,000 years ago, with the 20th-21st Centuries getting barely a paragraph, and no mention is made of Japan's unique position in the worlds of graphic narrative and keitai (mobile phone) fiction. An entry on "magical realism" isolates Julio Cortázar's pertinent writings to 1951-1956 for reasons not immediately transparent. And while there's a long essay on "Law and Narrative," the juncture of politics and narrative is hard to find, even in the index.

A more serious problem is the relative lack of sample quotations to illustrate some of the entries on specific elements and techniques of narrative. At first I thought this might be because the publisher required authors to obtain permissions for all quotes, as many publishers do, but Taylor & Francis's policies for authors seem to recognize that fair use and fair dealing exclusions from copyright make such a burden unnecessary. So I'm figuring that the paucity of examples is due either to perceived space limitations or to the fact that they just aren't theoretical enough. Either way, it reduces some articles' pedagogical value for the uninitiated, albeit while enhancing their value as aids for the sleepless.

Brillant but flawed E navigation

Content is great but the E version seems to have flawed navigation. The list of topics is not hyperlinked to the content. The index is linked but is so voluminous it can take five minutes to page through it if the required topic is not early in the alphabet. It would only be a couple of hours work to link of the topic list - will the editors please oblige??

This book is beyond acurate. I am not going to repeat what everyone says about the accuracy of this book, I am rather going to comment on the binding. For a 400 page book – I can see how everyone would have a hard time keeping it open while youre learning a song. I was lucky. I noticed in the options that there was a collectable for 19.99. When I checked it out, this is what it reads: 'Professional Musician Edition - The Spine Of This Book is Spiral Bound (plastic comb) - This Allows You To Lay The Book Flat - Great For Teachers, Skilled Musicians & Students etc...-' i am so glad I saw this. I ordered the 'collectable' and I am very happy that I clicked the link! The book will lay flat, will stand on a music stand etc. i recommend purchasing the one with the spiral binding. The seller (imagine-this) protected the book with cardboard and double packed it in bubble wrap envelopes. It arrived as if I picked out the best one on the shelf that was untouched. I included a couple pictures so you can see with the plastic spine looks like and how big the book is. I hope this helps – I highly recommend buying the collectible version. One reason I love Amazon.com is that they give you options – so far I have not been let down by them – thanks Amazon and Imagine-This! This is an unbiased opinion – I was not offered anything in return for this review – I just felt future purchasers of this book would like this information.

Great Book for Learning Chords After Justinguitar.com Beginner's Guitar Course

I bought this book after completing Justin Sandercoe's beginner songbook. This is a natural progression to go after to after Sandercoe's book (also a great book). The chord format is similar to how Sandercoe's chords are written out (ex. C G A), and is really easy to read. The book also has chord diagrams above the song so that you can learn new chords with each new song that you play.

I've also played through some beginning guitar books like Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, etc. If you've played through books like those the draw back of the book would be that there isn't any sheet style music so you can't keep time (unless you use the original recording) and you don't have a strum pattern.

Another possible drawback is that the book doesn't contain any melodies (sheet music or tabs) for the songs.

Very straightforward: Lyrics and Chords

Simple layout with the songs in alphabetical order (for the most part--as there are some mistakes) All the lyrics and all the chords are there so it's easy to play along. We use this book for our Beatlemaniacs sing-along group. Since we all have the same book, we are all in the same key, doing the same chords with the same words. Makes life so easy when everyone's on the same page.

Low Magic

Published in 1947, in many respects Elizabeth Butler’s survey of the magician reads like a text written thirty to forty years earlier. The structure of The Myth of the Magus would not look out of place among books by A.E. Waite and, to a lesser extent, W. W. Westcott. However, unlike those two, Butler has no drive to initiate her readers into the mysteries, her account is entirely exoteric. Be that as it may, although it’s perhaps unfair to judge her book by current academic investigations into what the magician means, a reader seeking any kind of clarity or depth is likely to be disappointed here.

The weakest of her trilogy on magic (the strongest is The Fortunes of Faust, a reading of the Faustian mythos as a Christian/Satanist interpretation of earlier legends), Butler’s introduction casts the magician as a stock character whose story is derived from the posthumous mythologizing of historical personalities and which, later, becomes an archetype after which some individuals have consciously sought to self-fashion. The social need for such a character, Butler argues, stems from a tribal memory of the shaman which has never quite died out but which has, instead, complexed. She argues that there are common stock features among the individuals regarded as Magi and lists ten such themes, few of which work (there is, for example, no “Dying-Rising” component in the stories surrounding most magicians) and the rest are obvious (“travelling in search of wisdom”).

Following this, short biographies of selected Magi beginning with Zoroaster and ending with Blavatsky (mercifully, Crowley, who died the year this was published, is absent) fill around three hundred pages. These biographies shed no light on the real personalities of the individuals concerned. Accounts of miracles and extraordinary events feature strongly but there’s nothing approaching how these individuals came to lend themselves to such stories, there is no questioning what characteristics these individuals possessed. In short, there’s no real analysis of what makes a Magus.

As an introductory text, The Myth of the Magus is functional if dry and antiquated but given the quality of a number of cultural histories on the magician and his art which are easily available, neither is this the wisest place to begin.

The historical basis of the Faust legend

An excellent historical guide for students of History or Religion. The Myth of the Magus is a very good and readable introduction to the history of magic in the West from the Magi refered to in the New Testament to Madame Blavatsky. Gives some insight into the historical survival of magical ideas and beliefs to the present, but the treatment ends in the early 20th century. Belongs with books by Norman Cohn, Frances Yates, Carlo Ginzburg, and Peter Levenda. One final note: The book does not ignore alchemical ideas but does not go into detail on them either.

With logistics getting more and more attention, and with its pervasive involvement in both materials and distribution management, logistics can be viewed as the glue that holds the entire supply chain mosaic together. As organizations realize the impact that supply chain management has on the bottom line, Supply Chain Vector provides an excellent explanation as to how the financials all tie together and how best to leverage the supply chain. Gardner goes into great detail, including a case study at the end of the book, illustrating how the actions of supply chain managers impact the overall financial performance of an organization.

Especially interesting to me was the discussion relating to the use third party logistics providers (3PLs). With integrated logistics, 3PLs offer the ability for a single entity to manage the entire process, including international air/ocean/overland transportation, customs clearance services, warehousing, distribution, etc. By consolidating these activities with a single 3PL, customers benefit by lead time reduction, and enhanced visibility and cost improvement. The author advocates the use of 3PLs throughout the process, even suggesting that in embracing lean manufacturing, just as raw material suppliers need to be involved in the design process, so should 3PLs as well. From a tactical perspective, potential improvements in the areas such as order management and documentation flow are plentiful and can be facilitated by the 3PL firm.

By going a step further and using an LLP - Lead Logistics Provider or 4PL, supply chain executives manage relationships, not processes (classic outsourcing). By rationalizing the number of 3PL relationships and choosing an LLP organization they can focus on the real business of supply chain management: the control of landed costs, stabilization of lead times, the pursuit of reduced inventory levels, and removing waste, or non-value-adding activities, e.g. overspending on services, administrative overload, extended transportation lead times and redundant processes.

The use of the same 3PL at origin and destination removes several steps from the process. Because waste is interpreted as time unnecessarily spent. The time savings in documentation exchange is of immediate appeal to lean supply chain managers. A 3PL can play a value-adding role in the proper handling of documentation:
"3 Cs"
Consistent: All information is the same on all documents: consignee/shipper name and address, product description, pieces, weight, country of origin, marks and numbers.
Complete: Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, import license, certificate if inspection, letter of credit.
Correct: All information on documents is accurate and matches cargo: labels, piece count, purchase order number, sales order number, and import license.
Whether or not an organization is a disciple of the outsourcing philosophy, it is undeniable that certain supply chain functions are best carried out by a 3PL provider. Not surprisingly, it is precisely these functions that collectively drive supply chain performance, creating the opportunity for financial enhancements on both the income and balance sheet. Similar to the benefits of working with a contract manufacturer, when negotiated and managed correctly, an outsourced 3PL model offers advantages that a company could never achieve on its own.

Cost benefits of working with a 3PL:
1)Payroll - avoid investment in logistics department, labor intensive warehousing and trucking operations.
2)Communication - Communication can consume up to 15¢ of every margin dollar. 3PLs can save customers the time and expense of addressing logistics-related issues with clients, suppliers and strategic partners around the world.

3PLs can decrease a client's investment in raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods, reduce the need for clients to tie up cash in warehouses, trucks and other distribution-related assets. In addition, a 3PL can be engaged to work on reducing transportation lead times to the operational and financial benefit of the client.

Impressive Book on the Model 12

As an avid outdoorsman, but inexperienced in the many nuances of firearms, I found Madis' book to be very helpful in understanding and appreciating the Model 12 that I own. Madis describes the history, features and configurations of the Model 12 in a documentary-like style. I would liken it to looking at a factory catalog, but one written with great knowledge, detail, care and skill.

Upon showing the book to my father-in-law and brother-in-law (both avid hunters; one of which owns a Model 12 and a Model 97), they thought the book to be the most detailed and authoritative they had ever seen. They frankly thought that such a book did not exist and were mesmorized at Madis' work. "Look at this!," they exclaimed at several pages.

For the Winchester enthusiast, this book will be a valuable resource and worth the investment.

A good book about a great shotgun

This is the definitive book about the famous "Model Twelve" Winchester.

George Madis covers the history and background leading up to this fine gun, the standards and variations, malfunctions that can happen, their probable causes and remedies. He covers the various chamberings, markings, chokes, matting and ribs, sights available, stocks--you name it, it's in this book. And, the book is full of high-quality photography depicting the things in the text.

This shotgun, which is the direct descendant of the equally well-known Winchester model of 1897, is today a collector's item. You can imagine my delight when a relative gave me one in return for some work I did for him on his computer.

He had been on the verge of giving it to the police on gun buyback program. It has a four-digit serial number, and was actually made in 1912! It is a 16-gauge in pristine condition

Since the shotgun had already been blued once, I had it re-blued and the stock refinished. It is one of the most beautiful guns in my collection, today.

If you have a Model 12, or are just interested in them, this is a book you must have!

This 2007 edition has some changes from the 2003 edition (link:Communication in History: Technology, Culture, and Society (4th Edition)), but at a price difference of almost $100, I'd go with the earlier edition, which is still excellent.

Solid Academic Readings

The book is composed of historical essays, about 40 of them. Most of the essays are between 6 - 10 pages long. The book covers communication over a range of topics: Media of Early Civilization, Western Literacy, Print Revolution, Telegraph, Telephone, Photography, Motion Pictures, Radio, TV, and the Internet. They are written by noted authors, such as Walter Ong, Harold Innis, James Burke, Eric Havelock, Elizabeth Eisenstein, Marshall McLuhan and Neil Postman.

You are going to get a perspective on change, as communication technologies evolved throughout history. What were the contemporaneous thoughts as a transition was made from an oral society to a written one? Why was the invention of the phonetic alphabet important? Who were the controllers of communication in the Middle Ages? What effect did the printing press have and who were the early readers? Ever heard of the "optical" telegraph and why did it come and go so quickly? How did pictures and photos make their way into journalism? Nickelodeon, what's that? Can you imagine radio without advertisements? Who were the DXers? How did politics play a role in the creation of network TV? How did television bring the American family together? What is a prime-time hippie?

If those topics rouse your curiosity, the book may interest you. Historical essays go beyond dates and people, as the authors research (and muse) about the influence of technology on culture. You may find that some aspects of the transitional phase from one technology to another remain the same. I think the book is used most often as a foundational text for history classes. It can be a jumping-off-point for many of the topics.

The weakest part of the book is the last section that covers more recent events pertaining to the Internet. Some of the essays in this section did change from the 5th to the 6th edition. Perhaps not enough time has passed for historians to be able to take a more insightful look at this period.
