Grade 1-3--The title is one of the four sto ries in this book that continues the ad ventures of second-grade Horrible Har ry, previously seen in Horrible Harry in Room 2B (1988), and Horrible Harry and the Green Slime (1989, both Vi king). Short chapter books for readers graduating from beginning readers are welcome, and this series has been an enjoyable addition. But Class 2B, scene of Harry's adventures, may be a bit confusing to newcomers at first, as Kline barely introduces her narrator and characters. Previous fans, how ever, will enjoy another meeting with Harry and pals in these lighthearted outings, although Harry's horribleness is not very convincing. The title story concerns the arrival of ants to the class room and Harry's temporary loss of his position as "Ant Monitor" because he is bitten while locating a couple of es caping ants. The last story lacks any horridness or even much point, unless who you stand next to in a class picture really counts. Well-placed line draw ings extend the humor with lively rendi tions of this familiar cast of charac ters.

About the Author
Suzy Kline, the author of nineteen previous Horrible Harry books and four books about Song Lee, lives in Willington Connecticut with her husband, Rufus. Suzy and Rufus have been married for thirty-eight years. They met in the state where they both grew up: California. Suzy grew up in Berkeley and Rufus in Sacramento. Suzy graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in European history. She met Rufus at the Davis campus while attending that campus for a year. They got married and lived in different places, including Canada, before settling into Connecticut, the state they now call home.

Suzy taught in 5th and 6th grades at Shannon Elementary School in Richmond, California for 3 years, and 2nd and 3rd grades at Southwest Elementary School in Torrington, Connecticut for 24 years before retiring this past June. She now enjoys writing full-time and visiting schools and libraries. The couple share their home with two cats, Teeter and Hoag. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Emily, and four grandchildren: Jake, Kenna, Gabby and Saylor. A fifth grandchild is due in September, 2006. Suzy's mother just turned 96. She dedicated her most recent book, Horrible Harry Takes the Cake to her.

Suzy and Rufus enjoy attending UConn football and basketball games, and Suzy uses the UConn library as a reference for her writing facts.

Ants and people meet in this funny book

a great book

This book is about when Harry went to go on a Field Trip. And Harry fall in the pound .He got out of the pound. And he was so wet. He went home to tell his mother. What would happen next?

Look at the book to find out what happens next.

I liked the book because my favorite port of the book is when Harry Fell in the pound .It was funky. This happed to me. Once I fell in the pound. Was soaking and wet. Just like Harry? I was sad and he was mad.

I recommend this book to the 5th graders they will be able to read it and they will be able to solve the problem. The book is a mystery book, and the book is hard to solve. I like mystery

I give this book three stars because you enjoy it when you read it but it is not a book that deserves five stars.I recomend this book to somebody because sometimes you get board reading the same book there are four stories in this book and they are interesting because they have many details about the characters and when things happen that have to do something with them you wont think it is wierd.

A quick but insightful read...

O'Reilly recently released one of their free Radar Reports titled Data Jujitsu: The Art of Turning Data into Product by DJ Patil. This short (24 pages) report is packed with interesting insights and actionable information that will change the way you look at your next project. It's very much worth the minimal investment in time to download and read.

Data Jujitsu; Use Product Design; When In Doubt, Use Humans; Be Opportunistic For Wins; Ground Your Product In The Real World; Give Data Back To The User To Create Additional Value; No Data Vomit; Expect Unforeseen Side Effects; Improving Precision And Recall; Subjectivity; Enlisting Other Users; Ask And You Shall Receive; Anticipate Failure; Putting Data Jujitsu Into Practice; About The Author

The author thoroughly knows his topic, as he is a data scientist with real-world experience working on well-known sites such as LinkedIn. That is an example of a site that is driven heavily by data and connections between data. Observing what the site is actually used for, as well as what people attempt to accomplish, is what adds the additional value over time.

Given that this is a report rather than a "book", I found that the ideas and actionable content could be found on nearly every page. I thought his approach to solving the data issue prior to solving the application problem both refreshing and insightful. Why spend a fortune (both time and money) to create a product only to find out that no one has the problem you want to solve? Or worse, you spend far too much time solving the wrong problem (usually the more complex and "interesting" one) rather than the one that people would spend money to have solved. A cheap and usually non-scalable approach to collecting the data is preferable, as it allows you to figure out what needs to be the focus and what can be ignored. An example of that approach is Amazon's Mechanical Turk. MT can be a quick way to use humans to solve a problem (such as visual recognition) instead of spending untold amounts of time building a computer-based visual recognition system that may be tangential to the actual problem you're trying to solve.

Another interesting point was to have a conversation with the user instead of just having them fill in data. If you can design the interface to help the user enter "clean" and relevant data, while at the same time giving them feedback and value, they become your partner in finding answers and relevant links between data points.

Finally, I can't let my favorite title for a chapter/section go unmentioned... Data Vomit. It's what happens when you decide to focus on the amount of data coming back instead of focusing on what people are doing with it. Focus on actions, not volume of data returned. This hits home as it's very common to have users ask if we can generate data in formats x, y, and z. When you ask *why* they want that feature, the answer is often "I just thought it might be nice to have." Instead, I need to focus on what they actually want to accomplish, not on how many different contortions we can twist the data into...

Go ahead and download the report from either Amazon or O'Reilly. It'll take less than an hour to read, and you'll get far more than that in return.

While the book was free, I didn't feel you could get any more infomation than you would from a quick web search. While this was probably the intention of the book, the martial art metaphore doesn't quite fit as martial art is something fine and precise, not broad and general. A more fitting title would be - first time causal cart racing.
