Excellent Read for Any Investor

I just finished reading the Merger Arbitrage book by Thomas Kirchner and I really enjoyed it. Mr. Krichner's book broke down the philosophy and process behind investing in mergers in a simple and concise way so that anyone can understand how merger arbitrage works. The book has detailed examples of past mergers which really help to illustrate how mergers operate and how to take advantage of them. The book also talks about risks involved with mergers and explains how some risks really aren't that bad considering the potential up side for merger arbitrage strategies.

My favorite part of the book was chapter 12 which talked about how merger arbitrage strategies complement traditional investment strategies. Mr. Kirchner pointed out simple benefits such as diversification of risk and return streams as basic reasons to incorporate a merger arbitrage strategy into traditional investment strategies and he backs up his claims with data that shows exactly what he is talking about.

Overall I would recommend this book to any person who wants to learn more about investing. The book caters to any level of investor and it has great examples which really help out!

Highly readable and informative

Merger Arbitrage is informative and engaging and if you like finance and investing you will love this book, even if you haven't spent more than five minutes in your life thinking about mergers & acquisitions. A more descriptive title might have been 99 Mergers because that's essentially what the book is, the definitive collection of mergers and what we can learn from each one.

There are hostile takeovers, management buyouts, bidding wars, busted mergers, spinoffs, proxy wars, insider scams, activist shareholders, private equity kings, anti-trust suits, appraisal actions, and a few other situations that you've never thought of but should know about because let's face it, anything can and does happen in the financial markets.

It is a fun and informative read and Kirchner includes enough statistics to let us see the big picture, for example what mergers are more likely to succeed and why, both for firms and investors. It is also pro-shareholder and pro-investor and rightfully skeptical about both Wall Street (including private equity) and management. I still have one chapter to go in the book but am already recommending it to my friends and colleagues who have an interest in the markets.

I read a lot of books, but I also do due diligence before I read something. When I looked at the author's fund, it was clear that it was underperforming for very long stretches of time. Before you buy the book, do the research.

Mawadza is a lecturer in the Department of African Languages and Literature at the University of Zimbabwe. She obtained a Master's Degree in linguistics from the University of Florida, Gainesville, where she taught Shona for two years.

A disappointing textbook

It is quite a disappointing book, surprising for an author who got Master's degree in linguistics, I would have expected more from her. Since there is no audio accompanying the book, I would have expected a thorough explanation of the sounds. But sounds that are not found in English are not explained. The pronunciation of only one of the consonant clusters is given. Tones are given for only two words, both spelled guru, and the one meaning ruminant stomach is described as in low tone, although Dale's dictionary says only the first syllable has low tone. So then one has to consult Dale's Basic English-Shona Dictionary to see the tones of many words, though one does not see how the grammar affects the tones, that is only a dictionary.
The dialogues of each lesson in Beginner's Shona sometimes have words whose grammar is not explained until a later lesson, and sometimes words whose grammar is never explained in this textbook, since this textbooks explains only some basics of the Shona grammar. For example the dialogues have mwanangu, translated as 'my child', even though page 102 says mwana mangu is 'my child', so the use of the shorter form mwanangu is never explained.
The vocabulary after each dialogue has almost all words in the dialogue, even though some words should have been learned in a previous lesson.
P. 49 claims that the verb -ri cannot be used in the 3rd person, even though later pages have examples of it used in 3rd person in various noun classes.
Some dialogues have a person switching erratically between using familiar and polite 'you' verb prefixes toward the same person.
The habitual past tense is mislabeled by the author as progressive past tense. Shona turns out to have a true progressive past tense too, as I can see in Dole's dictionary, but Mawadza's textbook does not mention that one.
P. 89 has the wrong plural subject prefixes.
The augmentative class is consistently mislabeled in this textbook as argumentative.
P. 145 says that sei, when at the end of sentence, means 'how', but on p. 44 it is in the middle of a sentence with the meaning 'how'.
P. 152 says that na- is used for proper nouns and ne- for common nouns, yet the book has an example of na- used with amai 'mother' which is of course a common noun. Very confusing.
P. 164 claims that the object prefix comes between the object and verb, in reality it comes between the tense prefix and verb.
P. 172 says that kukuvara means 'to be hurt' but later on the same page, she claims, apparently wrongly, that 'to be hurt' is kuvara.
P. 176 says 'reflexive extension' when it is really reflexive prefix.
The book has key to the exercises, which is a good idea to have. Though on page 189 of the key, the diminutive of musikana is given as kamusikana, even though previous lessons give kasikana instead, so that is the form a good student would have written, and then be surprised by the key. In reality though, Doke's book about South Bantu languages says with this noun class, both options are possible, so either the diminutive class prefix is attached directly to the stem, or else the normal class prefix is kept, so the diminutive class prefix is attached before the normal class prefix. But this textbook never explains that fact.
At the end is a Shona-English vocabulary for the textbook, which is good to have, but there is no English-Shona vocabulary.
The vocabulary translates gore as 'cloud', and makore as 'years', though in reality we are dealing with homonyms, gore means both cloud and year, and makore means both clouds and years.
Several verbs introduced in the lessons are missing in the vocabulary, like kubatsira 'to help', kupa 'to give', kusvika 'to arrive'.
So in summary, the textbook is of quite a poor quality.

About the Author
Eric Dollard is an Electrical Engineer who is a “living legend” in the field of electrical research. He is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable expert alive today on the true nature of electricity. Author of the landmark mathematical papers Symbolic Representation of Alternating Electric Waves and Symbolic Representation of the Generalized Electric Wave, Eric shows how all electric phenomena can be mathematically measured and engineered WITHOUT using calculus or “Maxwell’s Equations.” Author of Condensed Intro to Tesla Transformers and Theory of Wireless Power, he is also the only person since Tesla’s death to successfully build a real Magnifying Transmitter. Charles Proteus Steinmetz was hired by GE to break Tesla's polyphase motor patents and to develop a mathematical model to analyze it, which was a four-quadrant model based on "Versor Algebra." In the last year, Eric Dollard has brought Steinmetz's Versor Algebra model to a completion as well as simplified it. The truth about electricity

I have been in the electrical and computer science industry since 1968. This is the best book ever written on electricity and electrical engineering. Eric Dollard through research and experiment, brings back the suppressed science of Charles Stienmetz, JJ Thomson, Heaviside, Tesla, Ernst Alexanderson, Kennelly and simplifies it so that a high school student can understand. Mandatory reading for all those in the electrical, electronic and science field. Laypeople and the average person should read this book to give themselves a better understanding of the world. If you cannot afford this book then sell all your physics books and buy this one. After reading this book, you will have a better understanding of electricity than most engineers, PhD's and Nobel Laureates. My only complaint is; " Eric Dollard . You should have come out with this book in 1974. I would not have wasted a lot of my life.!!!!!!!

A must read for any student in physics. A very clear compilation and synthesis of all the major publications which have brought the main break through in electromagnetism. A changing and opening mind approach, especially for those who understand something about a Tesla's work. Years studies saver.

Real and raw information in layman's terms. Incredible book..

Incredibly brilliant, not for those conformists who only feed their ego on partial information dictated to them in a broken language and scientific dogma.. This blasts the doors wide open. Lets be clear, the energy industry is based on control, as is any corporation designed to survive in modern times. Tesla's, Heaviside's and great other's contributions have been swept under the rug after being contained. The doors have been closed. This man has the brilliance and perseverance to re-open them. A must read.

Axe-grinding

This does not strike me as quality scholarship. Thorndike is enormously hostile towards the traditional heroes of the scientific revolution. On Francis Bacon, for example, the unqualified conclusion is that "he did not think straight" (p. 88). I am certainly no admirer of Bacon's, but even I find this a bit hard to stomach. Elsewhere, Thorndike finds it appropriate to attack a work of Huygens as "woefully weak from the standpoints of both science and logic" (p. 636), but it is hard to see the merit in this tirade since the work in question is an innocent popular book speculating about life on other planets, which Huygens himself introduces as such, saying that "I can't pretend to assert any thing as positively true (for that would be madness)" (p. 9 of the english translation, not quoted by Thorndike, of course).

But perhaps yet another tirade is the most telling illustration of Thorndike's ignorance and baseless biases:

"Kepler held the erroneous view, but one all too common then and since, that the world had been asleep for a thousand years ... but that from the year 1450 on civilization had revived. ... The slur on the period before 1450 came with especially bad grace from Kepler ... Consider the association of the spheres of the planets with the five regular solids in Kepler's Mysterium cosmographicum of 1596. ... Kepler himself represented it as divine revelation such as he had never read in the work of any philosopher, and that he would not renounce the glory of its discovery 'for the whole electorate of Saxony'. But if Kepler had turned to the commentary on the Sphere of Sacrobosco (early thirteenth century) which Prosdocimo de'Beldomandi completed in 1418, and which was printed in the collection, Sphaerae tractatus, of 1531 (Venice; L. A. Junta), he could have read that Campanus of Novara in the thirteenth century in his commentary on Euclid's Elements, penultimate conclusion of Book 13, told that certain disciples of Plato said that the sky of the whole mass of the heavens and each of the elements was angular and not spherical, and that the number of essences corresponded to the number of regular solids: the pyramid to fire, hexahedron or cube to earth, icosahedron to water, octahedron to air, and duodecahedron to the fifth essence, 'as may be inferred in conclusions 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, of the 13th book of Euclid's Elements, and more clearly from Campanus in his comment on the 17th conclusion of the said 13th book'. Perhaps Kepler had read the passage and it subconsciously suggested his own theory to him. In any case, he had no license to scorn medieval science before 1450." (pp. 11-13)

Apparently Thorndike has never read Plato's Timaeus, where all these theories are laid out in perfect clarity. He is as stupid as his medieval heroes in thinking that wisdom hides in this sort of pretentious name-dropping and baroque references to unoriginal copyist. Of course it is ridiculous to suggest that Kepler "subconsciously" took his inspiration from these medieval idiots, since it is well know that Kepler (consciously!) read the Timaeus (which he cites repeatedly). This is the kind of faux scholarship that is supposed to show that Kepler's view of the dark ages was "erroneous."
