Ultimate Singalong Review

The Ultimate Singalong has a wide variety of songs. Most are written for the intermediate piano player. The only drawback is the binding on the book which makes it difficult to keep open and turn pages. Otherwise, I am happy with the content and the experience with Amazon.

The work is a recent project and does not use "old" english or difficult to understand words.



This is the complete english version which includes all 30 sections of the Quran as well as the inline commentary and introduction to the Quran.

Translators foreword:

In preparing this translation of The Quraan, the dilemma was whether to use very ornate and elegant language which could compromise clear understanding for most people or to use a simple and clear style of language. Because the intention was to make The Quraan clear to every person, the second style was chosen, even though it may at times lack the dignity and lofty tone. It was also chosen because thousands of English-speaking people who are not very proficient in the language found the lofty language of other translations difficult to understand. This translation caters for their needs by providing where necessary synonyms between brackets. It is the language of only the Divine that can combine exceptional eloquence and ease of understanding.

Unlike in previous translations, footnotes are not used in this translation. Rather the explanations which have been given between brackets, serve multiple purposes. Firstly, they save the reader the need to look for the corresponding footnote which often hampers one's train of thought and understanding. Secondly, the explanations enhance the meaning of a verse by adding text which is often hidden. This is especially necessary in a translation of the Quraan because the Arabic text is extremely compact and rich in meaning, and to render the same meaning in another language requires the use of many more words. By using words between brackets, the essential text of The Quraan is not confused with the additional words that are required to promote understanding.

I have many books with english translation of the Quran and commentary, but the content of the commentary is too extensive. I have been waiting for one to be a lot more precise and straight to the point and here it is! Alhamdulillah, I definitely would recommend. Before, the translation, there's a whole section introducing the Quran itself and explaining the types of revelations and overall teachings of the Quran- making it perfect for someone who has little knowledge about the Quran and Islam. So as a whole, in my opinion its audience encompasses ALL people- which is a bonus!

A Nice Translation

This translation is wonderful! It doesn't leave anything out and is a comprehensive Quran but allows English speakers to fully understand it in simple language and explanation. The author has put a lot of work into translating it and putting commentary so everyone can read the book. At only $4.99 it is one of the best priced books on Amazon Kindle. This edition is especially great because you can search for passages you want with your Kindle's search feature and get definitions on words with the built in dictionary. This is a professionally made, excellently translated book and I would give it 5 out of 5.

Too much embedded explanation

The entire book is printed with explanation and interpretation written in parentheses in the middle of every line, for example: "Their likeness (the comparison of the hypocrites) is like that of people who lit a fire. When the surroundings lit up (and they enjoyed the light, heat and security of the fire), Allaah took away their light and left them in the darkness, unable to see (they cannot find their way and are scared...)"

This ruins the flow of the text and makes it annoying to read. The interpretation and explanation should have been done on the side or below the text with footnote numbers to indicate the referred to passages.

Entering service with the Dutch air force from early 1938, the aircraft was also built under license in Denmark and Finland. Production was also scheduled to commence in Spain too but Nationalist forces overran the factory before this commenced. The Dutch D.XXIs saw less than a week of action following the German invasion of the west on 10 May 1940, with many of the country's 28 fighters being destroyed on the ground. However, those that survived the initial onslaught inflicted losses on the Luftwaffe, 15 pilots sharing in the destruction of 14 German aircraft (fighters, bombers and transports). By then, however, the D.XXI had found everlasting fame in Finland during the Winter War of 1939-40. Proving itself a real thorn in the side of the Soviets, the fighter, operating in primitive conditions and against vastly superior numbers, Finnish D.XXIs racked up an incredible score against the Red Air Force, and in particular its bomber units. No fewer than ten pilots became aces during this brief, but bloody, campaign, with a similar number claiming four victories and subsequently 'making ace' in later types. The sturdy D.XXI was highly rated by the leading Finnish pilots of the time, boasting a good rate of climb and the ability to break off combat when required thanks to its high speed in a dive. The D.XXI also has the distinction of producing the first 'ace in a single mission' in World War 2, when then 1Lt Jorma Sarvanto shot down six Ilyushin DB-3 bombers on 6 January 1940. After spending a year providing home defence and flying coastal patrols during the early stages of the Continuation War in 1941, all surviving Finnish Fokker D.XXIs were relegated to the reconnaissance role, which they performed through to the end of hostilities in September 1944.

About the Author

Kari Stenman is the world's leading authority on the Finnish Air Force during World War 2, and has written or co-authored many books on the units and aircraft of this most interesting service. He has previously co-authored volumes for Osprey on Finnish Aces in the renowned Aircraft of the Aces series and on their leading fighter unit LeLv 24 for the Aviation Elite series.

Peter de Jong is a professional editor and translator, and has collaborated on numerous modern history and aviation history books, as well as having written numerous magazine articles since 1995. His comprehensive work on the most historically significant Fokker aircraft of World War 2, the D.XXI, was published in French in 2005, and is soon to be followed by a revised volume in his native Dutch.

An excellent companion to Osprey's other books on the Finnish Air Force in WWII

This book provides excellent coverage of a topic not covered much elsewhere and is generously illustrated with many rare photos. The text is presented in a logical chronological order following the progression of the D.XXI's career as the focus of the war shifted. The color plates are particularly good. I have purchased numerous books in Osprey's "Aces" series, and this book is among one of the best. If you have an interest is the air forces of the smaller countries drawn into WWII by the aggression of their more powerful neighbors, then this book will be of great interest to you. After purchasing this book, I also purchased Osprey's other books covering the Finnish Air Force in WWII. All were excellent reads. Highly recommended.

A little known aircraft in lesser known conflicts.

This work covers the Fokker D.XXI and it's use in WWII.

The development is described, although a bit more sparsely than is usual in this series of books. It does make up for the aforementioned by it's in depth examination of the aircraft's operational use by the Finns, Danes and Dutch in the early part of WWII. If you are interested in the Russo-Finnish War in the air this book is invaluable and more than worth the price of purchase.

If you are looking for technical descriptions of the Fokker D. XXI throughout this time you may be disappointed as this work lacks the usual diagrams and accompanying descriptions other works in this series I have read include. Having said that it is more than worth the cost for the text and pictures relating to the aircraft's combat career.

Fascinating book on an overlooked aircraft. Unfortunately, like the Brewster Buffalo, only the pilots of Finland seemed able to exploit it's true qualities in a combat situation. The author's did cover all three users of the aircraft, Holland, Denmark, and Finland. The color profiles, as always, are superb. A well researched book and I can't wait to read it again!

Great book!

The book itself is amazing! Adiga continues to build on the gritty, uncompromising realism that he's exploited for his other works, White Tiger and Between the Assassinations. It is a testament to his skill as a writer that he can describe a decaying Mumbai neighborhood extremely realistically while still injecting some feeling into it -- you can smell the sewage and the fried street food and still manage to make a connection with the locale and people Adiga writes about.
If you are new to India, I would recommend reading this book. Please do not read Shantaram. "Last Man in Tower" (or, even better, "Behind the Beautiful Forevers") is a much more realistic and uncompromising view of life in the city. It gives you an idea of the desperate lives people lead -- a very dramatic and emotionally charged experience, but with a healthy dose of the ridiculousness that reality always provides. Definitely recommend this book.

Since the Second Vatican Council (1962-5), the Catholic Church has formally declared the possibility of salvation for atheists: 'those who, without fault, have not yet arrived at an express recognition of God' (Lumen Gentium 16). However, in the very same document, the Council also reiterates the traditional doctrine of the necessity of faith, baptism, and the mediation of Church in order for someone to be saved (Lumen Gentium 14). This monograph explores how these two seemingly contradictory claims may satisfactorily be reconciled. Specifically, it asks - and ultimately answers - the question: How, within the parameters of Catholic dogmatic theology, is it possible for an atheist to be saved?

As the first full-length study of this topic since Vatican II, the book discusses crucial foundational issues - the understanding of 'atheist' in Catholic theology; the developing views on both unbelief, and the salvation of non-Christians, in the decades preceding the Council - before tackling the conciliar teaching itself. Considerable attention is then given to the classic solution of imputing an 'implicit' faith to righteous atheists, best known from Karl Rahner's theory of 'anonymous Christians' (though the basic idea was advocated by many other major figures, including Ratzinger, Schillebeeckx, de Lubac, Balthasar, and Kung). After discussing Rahner's specific proposals in detail, this kind of approach is however shown to be untenable. In its place, a new way of understanding Vatican II's optimism for atheists is developed in detail, in light of scripture, tradition, and magisterium. This draws principally on Christ's descent into Hell, a renewed understanding of invincible ignorance, and a literal interpretation of Matthew 25.

The aim of this work is to elucidate "how, within the parameters of Catholic theology, it is possible for an atheist to be saved." While not intended as an apologetic response to the New Atheism, Bullivant is correct in observing that his work will challenge one item in the New Atheist arsenal, namely the assumption that individuals who happen to lack certain "religious information" are thereby automatically assumed to be damned. The primary focus of this study consists in elucidating two poignant sentences of Lumen Gentium 16: "Those also can attain to salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, yet sincerely seek God and moved by grace strive by their deeds to do His will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience. Nor does Divine Providence deny the helps necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God and with His grace strive to live a good life."

Bullivant's post-mortem solution to the problem of how atheists might be saved is plausible and well-argued. In brief, Bullivant proposes that atheists can be saved in accordance with what they have done to Christ's "least ones." In a move all-too rarely made in contemporary theology, Bullivant offers hagiographical evidence to corroborate his claim. After a delightful analysis of how his paradigm is reflected in the lives of St. Benedict and St. Martin de Tours , the author dwells at greater length on the theology of Bl. Mother Teresa, who taught that Christ is present "in his distressing disguise" in the poor themselves. If this presence is as the saints describe it, then moral atheists not only act under the influence of grace but also have an objective encounter with Christ himself when performing corporal works of mercy for his "least ones." Echoing D'Costa, Bullivant thus argues that the atheist already in this life has an "ontological relationship" with Christ, whereas the requisite "epistemological relationship" with him will only be rectified post-mortem. None of this, he argues, requires that we attribute to the atheist implicit or anonymous faith; rather, in this case it is Christ who is anonymous. Briefly stated, "Anonymous Christs do not entail anonymous Christians."

For this reader, a significant remaining objection concerns how Bullivant seems to imply the presence of charity in an atheist while denying that this virtue is accompanied by at least implicit faith. It is difficult to see how the salvific grace an atheist receives in his encounter with Christ's "least ones" is not accompanied by some noetic content.
