This is a really great book with two fiesty sisters who love each more than anything and are constantly getting themselves into trouble with their nieghbors. Chase and Turner don't let them get away with anything and boy was it fun to watch the roamnce unfold slowly throughout the story.

The Best Textbook on the Subject Available

Meyer and Sherman's classic work is the best starting point for understanding Mexico's rich history. It is easy to read with many illustrations, yet sophisticated and complete. The authors take us from Mexico's early Indian civilizations through the Aztecs and the Spanish Conquest. The Colonial period recieves somewhat brief treatment, but the revolution and early independence period do not. The Porfiriato and Revolution of 1910 are carefully examined,as is the post-1940 era. The authors treat their material with great reverance and are careful with their moral judgements of the many controversial actors.

Good overview, a little light on details

Overall, this was a good survey of Mexican history. The writing style was easy to read--not as dense as most history text books-- and was informative on more than just facts. This books covers pre-Colombian history, the Conquest, the fight for independence from Spain, and the evolution (and revolutions) that occured after independence. Also, this book goes into more than just historical fact by expressing ideas that spread through the country, cultural changes, and political trends. This is a great place to start learning about Mexico and, with the recommended reading lists at the end of each chapter, a good reference if a person wants more details on a specific subject covered in the book.

Excellent Single Volume History

This is perhaps the best comprehensive history of Mexico written in English that exists. The authors have been painstaking in their research and provide many, many sources and citations but do not litter the work with a cumbersome academic citation apparatus. Best of all, the provide an annotated bibliography of works in Spanish for the Mexican scholar.
The history of Mexico is astonishingly rich and complex, riven with conflict, religious strife, and fundamental disagreements about constitutionalism, liberalism (small L) and foreign entanglments. It is also a sad story with near constant violence and upheaval. The redeeming feature of the history, and what pulls the story along and saves it from the maudalin, is the stoic character of the mexican people.
This is comprehensive work that deals in turn with society, culture, economics, religion and politics. Being a single volume work, it certainly gives brief treatments of many topics. As a prior reviewer notes, the colonial period is not treated as deeply as others. But then again, it was three hundered years of economic explotation and social subjugation, what is left to say?
This is an excellent work for the Mexican enthusiast, for serious historians as well as for Americans of all persuasions.

Mandy Concepcion has worked in the automotive field for over 21 years. He holds a Degree in Applied Electronics Engineering as well as an ASE Master & L1 certification. For the past 16 years he has been exclusively involved in the diagnosis of all the different electronic systems found in today's vehicles. It is here where he draws extensive practical knowledge from his experience and hopes to convey it in his books. Mandy also designs and builds his own diagnostic equipment, DVD-Videos and repair software.

Not very helpful

Be aware that this book is only 65 pages. That's not much info for a relatively high cost.

The material as presented is useful and clear. This book covers only the actual sensors involved however. It seems to be part of a larger series. For the money, I would look for a more comprehensive book.

About the Author
Dean Baker is the cofounder of the Center for Economic Policy and Policy Research in Washington, DC. Before founding the center, he was a senior economist in Washington's Economic Policy Institute. He has authored or edited several books, including The Conservative Nanny State: How the Wealthy Use the Government to Stay Rich and Get Richer (2006), Social Security: The Phony Crisis (1999, with Mark Weisbrot), Getting Prices Right: The Debate Over the Consumer Price Index, which won a Choice book award as one of the outstanding academic books of 1998, and Globalization and Progressive Economic Policy (Cambridge University Press, 1998, coedited with Jerry Epstein and Bob Pollin). Dr Baker has also written for a variety of professional and general-audience publications. His work on economic policy issues is often cited in the media, and he is frequently interviewed on television and radio. Dr Baker has also testified a number of times before Congressional committees. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan.

Robert Pollin is Distinguished Professor of Economics and Codirector of the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has served as a consultant on energy and the economy for a wide range of organizations and institutions, including the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Industrial Development Program (UNIDO), and numerous nongovernmental organizations. He is author of "Back to Full Employment "(MIT Press), also in the Boston Review series, and "Contours of Descent: U.S. Economic Fractures and the Landscape of Global Austerity".

Very insightful

Very insightful book. If only more people would read stuff like this. It offers perspectives from the negative side of the globalization argument that most people are unaware of. Unfortunately at times it does feel one-sided as well, maybe not presenting some of the positives. Nevertheless, facts are facts, and if you want to be informed you have to be aware of them. Maybe pick up another book to balance this a bit :)

Small warning: I believe this is a college textbook more than anything. It is a collection of papers written by various economists around the world. Therefore it can be long, dry, and definitely not light reading. But if you're hungry for information, this is it!

Against the globalisation bogy

In this excellent collection, 37 contributors from around the world study the World Bank, the IMF, the multinational corporations, movements of capital, goods and labour, and the possibilities of national economic renewal. David Felix points out that the financial liberalisation of recent decades has led to slower growth of output, investment and productivity. Mehrene Larudee observes that Mexico, for instance, grew 6% a year with the industrialisation and protectionist policies of 1951-81; when it joined NAFTA, the economy, jobs and wages all shrank. Ha-joon Chang suggests that workers in multinational corporations have a far stronger bargaining position than employers make out. These firms often threaten to move, but rarely do. They have high sunk costs in physical plant, infrastructure, subcontracted production networks and services, skilled workers, local knowledge. Workers can take control of our workplaces, industries and countries. We can impose capital controls and reinvest the wealth we create in productive industry. `Globalisation', like the idea of God, is a ghost to frighten us. Eban Goodstein proves that protecting the environment does not destroy jobs, contrary to employer propaganda. Gregory DeFreitas argues against an open borders policy, while also opposing racial biases in immigration policy. He notes, "emigration represents a subsidy to the receiving country from the nation that trained them, as well as a loss of valuable talents to their homeland."
Arthur McEwan sums up the book's findings: "The neo-liberal regime that is being imposed on the world economy by the Bretton Woods institutions, the US government and other powerful public and private actors is doing a great deal of damage. It is a regime that harms people in all sorts of ways in the name of economic growth, but it does not even do very well at providing economic growth. The reign of neo-liberalism has not come about as some inevitable historical process, but has been actively constructed by the powerful actors that gain from its establishment. Alternatives exist, and the alternatives tend to work better."

Interesting but not systemetic

I read this book in a graduate class on globalization. The word ¡®progressive¡¯ in the title refers to the perspective of political economy ie, not the one of neoclassical or neo-liberalist. Arguments from economists, in particular political economists on globalization are somewhat hard to see. Authors focused on side effects of globalization. Their perspectives vary but they can be labeled as the view of ¡®race to the bottom¡¯ against optimistic views of neo-liberalist. It¡¯s interesting to see what should be done against hard economic trend, globalization from the perspective of losers not winners. And this book has wide coverage from IMF, World Bank to TNCs, Global financial market, inequality. But I should point out some weakness of the book.
1. They doesn¡¯t offer any explanation on what caused the globalization at all. Globalization is presented as mere background to draw their conclusions. Some Marxist schools explained the process of globalization in terms of the diminishing rate of profit. But this book lacks such logics. I think the purpose of this book, offering alternative policy to speed down the process of globalization, drove authors in that direction.
2. My major is not economics but economic sociology. So I had some difficulties to follow all lines of the economists. But it¡¯s not wholly my fault. I have had no such difficulty with economic journals like The Economist. The explanation of economic phenomena which are mainly macroeconomic one, is not kind to reader. I think authors assumed that this book would be read by expert policy makers not by mundane students.

Absolutely phenomenal, the way a Training resource SHOULD be written!!!!

I bought this NMAP Cookbook along with NMAP Network Scanning, the NMAP Official Book by the developer himself.

This is literally my first book review - never felt strong enough about any other book to warrant such comments before.

For those who want to learn sanitized, no-fluff, specifics on using NMAP - this nearly 200 page "NMAP Cookbook" is a must have, highly recommended resource for any IT/IS Systems Engineer, Administrator or especially Security Professional entering the field.

Having read the book in 2 days, you too should be using NMAP like a Pro within weeks.

Straight forward and right on target with generally Single Page contents highlighting NMAPs command sets, switches, features, options and then providing just the right amount of information without overkill.

Those who prefer lean, direct, point driven directions will probably appreciate this book, just like I do.

On each page, the Author supplies simple content such as;

- Command/Feature/Option,
- Summary of its purpose (generally a single sentence),
- Sample usage/syntax (exact commands, how a user should use it),
- Real world sample of both, the command itself and its anticipated results,
- More detailed of a description,
- At the bottom, to top it off, you'll likely encounter some "Tips" or "Notes" offering just the right amount of complementary insight.

Personally, this is the best instructional book on a Security Tool I have ever seen - and this from an evaluator with 20yrs of IT/IS experience too.

I completely and fully recommend this resource to everyone interested in learning NMAP, especially those wanting quick, efficient teachings.

NMAP in depth

I am a computer professional who uses nmap to scan my network for anomalies. Overall the book added to my knowledge of how to use nmap. I particularly found the following chapters useful:

Chapter 4: Advanced Scanning Options
Chapter 5: Port Scanning Options
Section 9: Output Options
Section 13: ndiff
Section 14: Tips and Tricks

The nmap cheat sheet is also very valuable and is available for download.

There was also excellent chapters on avoiding firewall and other topics that would be more interesting to those doing pentesting.

Basic but limited

The emphasis is on fat-free. There is not a lot of specifics or much detail. The entire book can be read in a matter of hours. It is clearly intended for those with very limited background in the subject matter. Anyone seeking to move beyond the simple basics will be highly disappointed. Just because the book is not a great resource for the professional does not mean that it lacks value, but the buyer should be aware that the book will not provide deep answers or lead the reader to professional knowledge on network scanning or even on the use of NMAP as a scanner, but they will be introduced to the fundamental uses of the program and to network scanning in general.

About the Author
Naomi Wallace is from Kentucky. She was a 1999 recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, the grant popularly known as the genius award. A published poet in both England and The United States, she has also received grants from The Kentucky Foundation for Women and The Kentucky Arts Council and a 1997 NEA grant for poetry.

haunting & beautiful

Wallace's One Flea Spare is nearly unbearably beautiful in its precise language and poetic images, such as a woman who has not been touched by her husband in years speaking of a horse burning in a stable fire. The characters are all stuck in both a real and a metaphorical prison (people did get locked into their houses in plague ridden England)and can not escape each other. The class system is suddenly kicked aside when all the characters find they must depend on one another for their very survival. It speaks politically but the voice is never pedantic, as the honesty of the narrator, a witty and relentlessly observant young girl strips the pretenses and defences of the the adults around her in ways that are startingly funny.
The drama and suspense is fired up by the situation and by the building sexual tensions and confronations. Politics, voyeurism, poetry. It's all here. A brilliant work.

A Real Erotic Gem

This startling and fresh drama actually takes place in 1665, and concerns two upper class Londoners who get locked into a house with a sailor and a mysterious little girl. Because a servant died of plague in the house, the house has been boarded up for thirty days. Therefore, the four occupants must spend this time together in confines too close for comfort. What transpires in this at times hilarious black comedy is a disturbing clash of classes, and an exploration of gender roles and the body.
What is especially striking in the play is the erotic and strange love story between the sailor, Bunce, and the much older Darcy. Darcy's body has been badly burned from a childhood accident. In one scene of searing erotic intensity, Bunce touches her body in different places to see where she has feeling left. In another scene, Darcy puts her finger into a wound in Bunce's side. These are the sort of disturbing and erotic gender-bending scenes for which Wallace is known. This play will not disappoint!

Outstanding, one of the best pieces I have read in years. Wallace has an amazing ability to create such a sparse, detailed and controlling environment.
