One of the very best--brilliant

This is one of the very best books written in English on the history of music. It is not the easiest book in terms of the level of knowledge required by the reader, but the writing is very good and sparkles in comparison to many music history books which are more like textbooks.
The book is written as a series of little stories that are presented more or less in chronological order. If you are interested in the history of Western music, this book will present you with real insights from a musicologist who interprets the sources in historical context.
There are more fascinating details per page about music history in this book than any other book of its type, and there are quite a few pages. A great read for any serious student of music or professional musician. It can be used as a sort of mini-encyclopedia as you can for example just refer to the articles on Beethoven or Mozart--but there is much more. A minor criticism is that some of the language needs to be updated. A gem.

Strong Overview Up To The 20th Century

For a "concise", this book is remarkable in detail from ancient times music up to and including early baroque era. Some 30 years later, it may be unfair to say, but the amount of space dedicated to the role of church and church music is excessive at the expense of better coverage for Impressionist Era and Early 20th Century. In fact, you could buy this book as an excellent primer on the role of the church developing Western music up to 1800 and be quite satisfied. The blending of historical context in that stretch is excellent. Worst flaw in the book is its lopsidedness to the history of Western Music prior to middle 19th century, despite being published in the late 1970s. Perfect title for a re-print and face lift would be "Concise History of Early Music", while dropping the material on 20th Century altogether. That would be a perfect piece of work without the pretension of covering "History of Music". Excellent music history book if you are accepting that it is highly focused on Early Western music development and no where else offers same treatment.

About the Author
Martin’s interest in the Paranormal and Occult goes back to his childhood. He has had many paranormal experiences and has been a student of Eastern Philosophies and Meditation for 40 years. Martin is also an Engineer by training and has had multiple careers. He has a B.S. degree in Engineering Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1977. He has done extensive graduate work in management and computer science. His career includes many years working for GE and HP and several large aerospace companies. Martin also owns his own software and consulting business. Not many technical persons or scientists spend a lot of time in parallel studying the Metaphysical and have had many spiritual or psychic experiences too. Therefore, Martin believes that he can provide a unique vantage point to integrate Western Scientific thinking with Eastern exploration of the mind and spirit.

Fun and educational book!

My daughter received the Snowy Day as an early Christmas present this year-which is an AWESOME book. Because of that, I requested the Rainy Day, as well. These books are wonderful-amazon recommends for 4-8, but my 2 year old loves them. My daughter has always loved books over any other toy, though. They are made of a heavier-duty paper then the typical book and the cover is a little bit puffy, so they are durable enough to put up with a toddlers inquisitive hands. These books explain some of the science behind what's happening incorporated into an entertaining story. What a GREAT idea! AND the illustrations are wonderful, too!

Love It!

I bought this book for my four-year old daughter and she loves it! It has pretty illustrations and it's also educational. Although [...] says it's for ages 4-8, the Usborne website states 2-years old and up. I love the Usborne books because they are so educational and engaging to look at, which doesn't hurt!
