About the Author
Monika Fludernik is Professor of English at the University of Freiburg/Germany. She is the author of The Fictions of Language and the Languages of Fiction (Routledge, 1993) and Towards a 'Natural' Narratology (Routledge, 1996), which was the co-winner of the Perkins Prize of the Society for the Study of Narrative Literature.

Excellent Introduction to Narrative Studies

I teach an Intro to Narrative Studies course and I cannot recommend this book highly enough as an extremely clear and thoughtful introduction to the study of narrative.

Fluffy

Fludernik is an expert in narratology, and she's a smart chick. However, she s***s the bed when it comes to teaching. The frameworks she uses are awful, and runs the risk of losing her readers before the second chapter. She mentions terms without defining them until much later in the book. They're also really hard to spot, so you have to read the book at the pace of a snail.
She takes forever to get to a point, just like every other academic, but once you understand what she's talking about, it's a great book. When you've managed to wrap your head around the concepts in the book, it lays out the fundamental principles of narratology in a great way. But that's only if you manage to get that far.
I'm pretty sure she could've written a book that would've been much more concise, and to the point, and it'd be more applicable both to casual readers and to her students.
If this is one of the premiere introductory books to narratology, there's no wonder this is a dying field of study.
