About the Author

W. James Potter, professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara, holds one PhD in Communication Studies and another in Instructional Technology. He has been teaching media courses for more than two decades in the areas of effects on individuals and society, content narratives, structure and economics of media industries, advertising, journalism, programming, and production. The book's only fault is that it is too comprehensive

Potter uses sterling logic to dissect, break down, and organize the various component parts of modern media. He then provides excellent, well-referenced, historical, economic, and political context for each. The author then analyzes how these influences shape the media content that we consume every day, and offers helpful online activities and downloadable resources to explore the issues. I used the book as a basis for a media course that I taught at a University in Korea and it was indispensable.

An interesting read

This book has a lot of good and interesting information about media consumption and gives the reader a good idea of how the media affects our thinking and perception of the world around us. It also gives insight into the media world and the schemes they use to grab our attention. It is easy to read but is not a thrilling read.

Extremely comprehensive nuts & bolts guide for leaders/managers/employers

This book says it's written for corporate leaders, but it's really for anyone who manages, wants to own a business, or wants to establish leadership status in any profession/industry. Basically, if you want to advance, you should be reading things like this; if you're already an executive, you may find this to be a helpful reference.

I would call this an insider's guide to the tools & skills necessary for managing people & businesses, & for corporate advancement. A great reference for existing executives (learning on the fly, diversity, time management, building effective teams, etc), and I would even recommend this to college students & young professionals to learn the culture and skills that are expected when you reach a certain level in your career.

Some of my favorite sections are: innovation management, organizational agility, sizing up people, strategic agility, composure, compassion, functional/technical skills, managing and measuring work, building effective teams, etc.

There are lots of books available on this topic, but this one is very concise, chock full of information (900+ pages), lots of skimmable bullet points, and very comprehensive.

This reference has been incredibly helpful to me both in charting my professional growth as well as in helping those working in my department with suggested actions for professional growth in specific areas.

The book identifies professional competences and defines what each skill 'looks like' when you are unskilled, skilled and even defines overuse which is very helpful. I've even used these definitions when preparing evaluations as they are wonderfully descriptive.

This tool suggests multiple short and long term strategies for development of each competency. Great book!

Provocative observations on the uses (and misuses) of ``classic'' fairy tales are overwhelmed by academic jargon in this oddly disjointed and disappointing study from Tatar (German Literature/Harvard). Expanding on her The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales (1987), Tatar examines the transformation of often ribald adult folk-tale prototypes into sometimes horrifyingly violent children's stories rooted in the assumptions and realities of a particular social context. At the time when such well-known collectors as the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, and Hans Christian Andersen were combining folk legends with the children's literary conventions of ``cautionary'' and ``exemplary'' stories, Tatar says, infant death, abandonment by parents, and starvation were not uncommon. Today, Tatar advises, these ``cruel'' and ``sadistic'' tales, anachronistic at best, with heroines earning redemption through ``a servile attitude'' and obedience, should yield to ``a creative folklore...reinvented by each generation of storytellers and reinvested with creative social energy.'' The author fails to elaborate on this point, however, with more than sketchy suggestions about discussing stories with children. Tatar does provide a neat common-sensical corrective to the interpretive inversions of Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment (1976), in which child victims become psychologically muddled villains (the starving Hansel and Gretel, Tatar points out, have reasons to devour the witch's house far more compelling than Bettelheim's ``uncontrolled cravings''). The author also offers an interesting dissection of the pervasive sexism of many fairy tales (why all the female villains?). The dreary monograph form of much of the book never quite gels, unfortunately, with Tatar's practical, if undeveloped, popular exhortations. A stellar resource

Tatar's text discusses readers as an "interpretive community" of individuals who are responsible for distilling meaning from stories independently but within a cultural framework. She points to an agenda of socialization and acculturization in children's literature, and notes that the values meant to be conveyed have shifted over the centuries. Though some of the language follows the challenging tone of literary criticism, on the whole this is a very readable text filled with invaluable insights.

Of particular interest is a chapter devoted to the study of fairy tale heroines, in which Tatar asserts that the characters' roles were meant to groom them for marriage and subservience. The text is well-researched, well-written and thoroughly considered. Though it displays a clear feminist bias, the observations stemming from that bias help to make this book of particular use to anyone interested in exploring the use of fairy tales as a form of indoctrination for young girls, as well as the villainization of women in fairy tales.

Truly outstanding work on folklore and fairytales

Maria Tartar's _Off With Their Heads_ is a brillilant analysis of European folklore and fairytales, showing not only the surreptitious way in which familar stories were "sanitized" for publication by notable folklorists such as the Grimms, but also the way in which the messages of the stories subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) were manipulated to become cautionary tales and to frighten children into behaving as adults want them to.

As D.Blankenship points out, much of Tartar's analysis is through a feminist lens; this makes sense, as many of the stories examined have female protagonists (from Rapunzel to Cinderella to the lesser-known "Mother Holle.") The gist being that girls are taught from a young age (old enough to listen and understand children's stories) that (1) beauty wins over ugliness, (2) minding your parents - especially your father - is rewarded, and (3) not minding your parents typically results in a horrible punishment disproportionate to the act. Later chapters are analyzed with a more psych-analytical lens, but with similar conclusions regarding wish-fulfillment and child-parent relations.

What struck me most powerfully was the way in which folktales, which were originally very scatalogical and "earthy" were modified and re-written to become not only cautionary tales, but also tales to "improve the moral standing" of children. That particular emphasis was put on breaking the spirit of the child - the earlier the better - in order to make them malleable and manageable I found particularly interesting (and appalling.) Given the early stages of industrialization when many of these tales were put to print, this makes sense. Tartar doesn't go far enough, I think, in drawing the parallel that these ideas remain in some parenting books and in the way in which some children are instructed even today.

A fascinating read, and one which I strongly recommend, particularly to those who have children or teach.

In mid-June 1943, Snelling Robinson, a 20-year-old Harvard graduate and newly commissioned ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve, joined the pre-commissioning crew of the Fletcher class destroyer USS Cotten. The new crew trained for the remainder of the summer and t hen sailed to Pearl Harbor in time to join the newly established Fifth Fleet. Under t he command of Admiral Raymond Spruance, the Fifth Fleet was given orders to invade Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands in November 1943. This offensive, along with naval battles in the Philippine Sea, the Leyte Gulf, and the invasion of Iwo Jima in February 1945, is chronicled from the perspective of a young deck officer and is integrated with the background of the larger conflict, including the politics of command. After Japan?s surrender, the Cotten became a part of the Occupation Force anchored in Tokyo Bay. Robinson deftly narrates how he and his friends took advantage of their good luck and brought their roles in the war to a fitting conclusion.

Eight Times Around the World in a Tin Can

Snelling Robinson, 200,000 Miles Aboard the USS Cotten (Kent State University Press, 2000) The Cotten was a Fletcher-class destroyer, built in 1943 for the express purpose of protecting America1s new fleet carriers from Japanese aircraft, submarines, and surface vessels during the final years of the greatest naval war in history. Indeed, it would be this hard-hitting combination of ships -- the fast carrier task forces commanded alternately by Admirals Marc Mitscher and "Slew" McCain with their supporting cast of battleships, cruisers and destroyers -- that would prove decisive in the Pacific War. The carriers captured the glory, but their success was greatly facilitated by the largely unsung "small boys," the hard-working, hard-riding destroyers. Snell Robinson1s superb account of his three years aboard one of the most ubiquitous of these destroyers is therefore a welcome new arrival among the body of literature of the savage fighting in the Central Pacific. Robinson came of age as a junior officer among the 300-member crew of USS Cotten (DD 669). He served principally as the ship's navigator, qualified as officer-of-the-deck underway, and stood his General Quarters post in "Sky One," the exposed gun director at the highest point in the ship. By fate, Robinson and his ship survived some of the greatest and bloodiest naval battles in history -- the forcible amphibious assault landings at Tarawa, Saipan, and Iwo Jima, and the enormous fleet engagements in the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. The vast scale of this sea war is reflected in the record of this one small destroyer, needle-thin with its maximum beam of 39 feet, steaming the equivalent of eight circumnavigations of the earth in its endless screening missions to protect the precious carriers. Robinson describes life aboard Cotten in its alternating monotony and terrifying action with a navigator1s attention to time and space and an honest appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of himself and his shipmates. Few authentic veterans have ever done a better job portraying life at sea on a small man-of-war. His narrative is crisp, informative, authoritative. Robinson describes the difficulty of his gunners trying to shoot down a night-raiding Japanese bomber by aiming at the exhaust flair -- "like shooting at the white tail of a running deer." He admits his awe at observing Task Force 58, now some 95 ships strong, sortie from Majuro Atoll in the Marshalls, heading west towards Saipan. He admits his fear -- everyone's fear -- at the report that the Japanese Mobile Fleet, including the two largest battleships in the world, had erupted into the Philippine Sea in search of Mitscher1s carriers. He describes how a destroyer at flank speed tends to squat by the stern; a sailor standing on the fantail would actually have to look up to see the surface of the ocean. And he informs us that the greater danger in the suicidal Japanese kamikaze attacks actually came from "friendly fire" as the entire fleet blazed away at the low-flying intruders. Nicely illustrated with maps by cartographer Mary C. Hoffman, this book is a hand-crafted jewel. I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in an unblinking account of the great sea war of the 1940s.

"Can do" up close.

This book is unlike most first-person accounts of sea duty during WWII. It includes aspects of seamanship and detail that don't ordinarily make it to the page. It expresses the exuberance and wonder of a young naval officer, despite having been written from the vantage of maturity. Perhaps this is because it was written from the author's contemporaneous ships' logs, but may be intended to relate experiences together with original feelings and attitudes. This has charm. It's self-effacing rather than self-important. One listens more closely, as to a youngster. The book deals with the Allied occupation of Japan; this is unusual, too. Also, the author's preference for Spruance over Halsey, shared by many, but expressed by few. The author served on one ship throughout the war. His theme comes through clearly: Many more served than saw action. The greater threat was boredom, not terror. Well written, though its language is a bit stiff; interesting; useful for young officers, as a guide to getting along. Demonstrates "can do" attitude of those who served on destroyers, including reservists.

Tanya Dove has been making clothes since she was 12 years old, teaching herself pattern cutting and sewing. She was educated at Central Saint Martins and The London College of Fashion in the UK.

Tanya has worked as a fashion designer and educator in London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Indonesia and Vietnam. Designing for the UK high street through to designer labels, including having her own fashion label. Tanya has also worked in the field of garment technology, from the fitting to quality control and production stages. She has a global perspective of the fashion industry and is a dedicated follower of fashion. She now dedicates her passion for the industry in guiding the next generation of fashion designers as a fashion design lecturer, curriculum course developer and educational consultant.

I'd love to go sailing with Dylan!!

Like some other reviewers, I'm completely addicted to the Sullivans... I pre-ordered this one and read it all within 24 hours of getting it. Dylan was unexpectedly sweet and I loved him from the start. I'd sure love to go sailing with him!! Grace was the perfect complement to him... beautiful (of course!) but smart, strong, and independent... maybe TOO independent! (But that's what makes the story!)

Like all of Bella's books, there are some wonderful, hot and steamy scenes in this story, along with just about the right amount of conflict to triumph over. My only complaint would be that when we reached the story's climax, it actually ended a little too quickly for me! The story was so well-woven that it just seemed as if I needed a little more substance as it wrapped up...

Still, it's a very satisfying read. Really fun to see the other Sullivans coming back into the story in various ways... that's what makes the series so addicting, after all! If you've read the others in the series, this is a do-not-miss, but if you haven't, you'll enjoy this more if you start with the first one - or at the very least start with Rafe and the other Seattle Sullivans.

Another beautiful Sullivan!

Ok- started and finished today. I could NOT put it down. Dylan Sullivan - sailor and Boat builder. An amazing man raised with/by a phenomenal family- meets Grace and her son, Mason when she wants to write about him for a magazine.

Grace has been burned and has a wall around her heart. Leave it to a Sullivan to tear it down. Their chemistry is on fire...they have that special magnetic relationship from day one. They are nice people with a great passionate fire burning beneath the surface. And together, they are quite a team.

This family- I love it. I wish I knew a family like theirs. I am hooked on this series and as always, Bella Andre writes impeccably. It's sweet, loving, happy and scorching hot, of course. She is one of the best!

Great book-- hope more family members come out of the woodwork so this series doesn't end soon!!

Bella Does it Again!

Bella does it again, with a sweet installment in her Sullivan's series. Dylan has waited to find love as he watched his siblings and cousins fall for the real thing. But when he sees it, there is no waffling on his part. He falls quickly, and hard and spends the rest of the book proving to his lady love that he is the real thing, and he thinks the world of her, and her sweet son, Mason. A fast read as you get caught up in Dylan's story, and then you'll want to go back and read both Mia and Ian's stories, so you recall once again, how those two tales fit with this one. If you love good storytelling, romance, and in this case, boats, you won't want to miss, I Love How You Love Me!
