Ahoy! It's another Backyardigans success!

This is another cute book in the Backyardigans series, based on an episode entitled, "Castaways." The book follows the show's storyline perfectly and it keeps our son's interest throughout it. This one is about the Backyardigans being stranded on an island and Austin is there, too, unbeknownst to the rest of the crew. Even my husband and I have been known to laugh at these books and the shows. Who said they're just for kids?
One aspect of some of these "Ready-to-Read" books is that the have the rebus pictures, something that is irritating to me and I don't feel it helps children read; in fact, it seems to break the natural flow of words. As a teacher and early literacy supporter, I prefer the pre-K books or ones that are simply words, just in shorter sentences or with repetition.
That being said, I love Backyardigans myself, honestly, because it encourages children to use their imaginations, their songs are catchy and NOT annoying, the stories are cute and creative, and the morals are fun and easy-to-understand. We have 10 of these books, our kids love them all, and they can read many of the words in them! They're part of our daily nap and bedtime routines and we all highly recommend them! If you want to buy only 1 book, however, I recommend the Big Book of Backyardigans as it contains many Backyardigans stories in one inexpensive book.

Great Book for Beginner Readers

Ahoy!
In the softcover book Castaways!, Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone pretend that their leaky ship was lost at sea, and now they're stranded on a desert island.
What they don't realize is that Austin has been "stranded", too, but he's too shy to say "Ahoy!" to the rest of the castaways.
While Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone look for wood, vines and leaves to build a hut for shelter, they soon realize that everything they need mysteriously shows up. Where did it come from? Could it be that they aren't alone on the island?
Castaways! is a Level 1 Ready-to-Read book which uses simple stories and rebuses to help teach reading. My son loves this book and can now read it on his own. It's a colorful, engaging bedtime story for younger children, and good for older children who are beginning to read.

GREAT book!

My daughter (age 2) and I love the Backyardigans! She has all the books and she really loves this one!! I read it to her every night and she points at the pictures as I tell her what they are. It's a very easy read and easy to follow along.
It's a long book for a little one, but it's great since the story is simple, cute, and fun to read!!
